While reading, writing and arithmetic are, of course, essential skills for anyone to have and develop, you also need to make sure that you’re teaching your children all the necessary life skills they need to really be able to flourish when they’re older… and the good news is that you can start this very early on indeed!
Decision-making is one such skill that you can teach your little ones – and it can be quite fun to do, as well. Start off small and simple with something like whether they want to wear their blue socks or their white socks, or perhaps what they’d like as a bedtime story and then build up from there.
The idea here is to help them weigh up the pros and cons of the decisions they’re making and then letting them make the final choice.
Social interaction is also a really important skill to learn and one that can be fostered at a young age. You can help your child develop empathy by being empathetic towards them and their own feelings, and this can really help them develop strong interpersonal relationships.
Skills to focus on include sharing, cooperation, listening, following directions, respecting the personal space of others, making eye contact and using good manners.
Teaching them independence early on can also prove very beneficial and you can easily start this by encouraging them to get themselves ready in the morning, creating flashcards to remind them what needs to be done, everything from getting dressed to brushing their teeth – under supervision, of course.
You might be surprised at how quickly they want to do these activities by themselves and, before you know it, they’ll be getting themselves out of bed, dressed and at the breakfast table, ready for the day… all without your help.
