No one wants to think about coming home to find an intruder on the premises, but it’s important to know what to do in such a situation – and the first piece of advice is to call the police immediately, if you have safe access to a phone.
It’s best not to challenge intruders if you do find someone at home, as you could put yourself or members of your family at greater risk. Keep as calm as you possibly can and if you think someone is outside, trying to gain entry to the property, do not go and have a look. Instead, keep the doors locked and call the police.
Legally, you are allowed to use reasonable force in self-defence or if it’s to protect your property or another person, with the level of force considered reasonable to use dependent on the threat you’re facing.
If you’re in the house and someone has broken in, try to find a way out of the house as soon as you can, whether that’s a safe exit through a window or, if you can’t get out try to find a place to hide.
When placing a call to the emergency services, make sure you tell them what’s happening, your address, your phone number and your name, anyone else in the property with you and where you and others are located within the house. If possible, try to give a description of the intruder, including gender, clothing, height, weight and so on.
