When it comes to decorating your home, it is always down to your personal tastes, if you love it, then it can’t ever really be wrong, and that includes how you finish your garden.
Country Living has reported on a lighthearted survey conducted by Draper Tools into the best and the worst garden trends, with 4 in ten garden owners admitted that they have regretted some of the decisions they’ve made with their own garden choices.
We’ve taken a look at the list of worst trends of all time, and to be honest, there’s some we’re a little fond of. With bird feeders and vegetable patches among the best trends, we have a look at 9 of the worst…
Top 9 worst garden trends of all time
Garden gnomes
Like marmite, people either love or hate these garden characters. But Asda brings out a new range of the cheeky chaps every season, and given how quickly they sell out, they must be well-loved?!
Fake grass
While some can’t believe that artificial grass is really a thing, many are quite happy to have ditched the lawn-mowing tasks.
Fake animal/bird statues
Ornaments of animals were also called out, no matter whether metal, wicker, or plastic, faux creatures (and we’re looking at you, plastic flamingo!) were cited as a terrible trend.
Artificial topiary balls
Similar to artificial grass, there’s a divide between those who run a mile from it and those who warmly welcome the fake plastic trees. Artificial topiary balls are usually placed either side of the front door to make a first impression and not a good one for those who aren’t fans.
Trampoline
It might keep the kids entertained for hours, but the trampoline is definitely seen as an eyesore. It’s something we can completely understand why it made the list.
Hot tubs
Well, we would have thought everyone would want a hot tub, but apparently not!
Pub in a shed
It’s surprising that this one has made the list, as a home bar has probably never been as appealing as it is right now. A cold pint after working in the garden all day? Yes, please!
Windchimes
These are definitely something down to personal taste. The sound they make can either be ethereal or an irritating racket!
“The research goes to show just how passionate we are about our gardens,” remarks Kev Smith, head of marketing at Draper Tools. “Clearly those polled have pretty strong opinions on what works and what doesn’t.
“Gardens are a very personal thing and what is right for one person isn’t necessarily right for another, so if you’re happy with your garden then that’s all that matters. But it’s certainly fascinating – and a bit of fun – to find out what people are keen on and what they’re not quite so fond of.’
About a quarter of the 2,000 garden owners polled said they make an effort to keep up with the latest garden trends, with three in 10 getting inspired at garden centres, and 26 per cent finding TV programmes a valuable source.
