This week saw temperatures plummet to -10C in some parts of the country, which reminded homeowners of the importance of having a fully-functional boiler to ensure their house is kept warm despite the cold outside.
However, recent research has shown many people neglect to check their home insurance policies to make sure emergencies, including boiler breakdown, are included.
According to Defaqto, only 19 per cent of home contents insurance and 25 per cent of home buildings policies protect against boiler repairs as standard.
Brian Brown, head of insight at Defaqto, said: “As the temperature starts to drop, having hot water and heating becomes a higher priority again.”
He added that as many insurance policies do not protect against home emergencies, “then a boiler breakdown policy that includes boiler replacement may be a good option for you”.
Mr Brown stated extreme weather could have disastrous consequences for homeowners, including flooding, icy conditions, and central heating breakdowns. This is why he recommended a comprehensive cover that includes different types of home emergencies.
Those living in Braemar might be particularly inclined to look for a comprehensive home insurance plan, as it was hit by severe icy conditions this week.
On Monday night (November 18th), temperatures dropped to -9.9C in the Scottish town, making it the coldest place in the UK so far this autumn.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings as a result, reminding people of the dangerous conditions and urging them to support vulnerable people during the cold snap.
It is thought that this arctic spell has killed four people already, including an 89-year-old woman in East Dunbartonshire, the Express reported.
