With the UKFast Manchester 10k taking place on July 7th, a few short days away, we thought we’d put a little blog post together to help you all hit your personal bests on the day if you’re taking part. And even if you’re not or doing another fitness event, you could well still find our tips of use… have fun, whatever you have planned on July 7th!

Make sure you warm up

You should never exercise with cold muscles as you could cause yourself an injury, but this is especially true if you’re going to be pushing yourself for a personal best on a 10k. If you can, jog for a mile, followed by some warm-up exercises like high knees or skips. You won’t warm up enough running the length of a 10k in order to set a new goal for yourself.

Prioritise strength training

Single leg exercises are good for building strength, so single leg squats, calf raises, hops and lateral hopes can all help you run more efficiently and stay injury-free.

Finish faster

Pacing is important when setting a new personal best so make this a focus in the future if you’re not sure how to do this now. Keep in control for the first third of the race, then start to push a little harder in the middle before really going for the fast finish at the end.

There’s still time to enter the UKFast We Love Manchester 10k, so if you’re ready for a new challenge, what about it? It starts and finishes at the Etihad Stadium as well, so if you’re new to the city you’ll have a great time looking around on your running tour of Manchester!
