The amount that councils around the UK charge to collect bulky waste, such as white goods and old furniture, has been branded confusing. Some areas still offer the service free of charge, while others charge over £40, the BBC reported.
It’s the south-east of England where there is the highest average charge for disposal of bulky waste by councils, the news provider revealed.
Professor Ian Williams, professor of applied environmental science at the University of Southampton, told the BBC that in many cases budget cuts have left councils with no choice but to charge for collection.
“I don’t think that there’s any doubt that the system is confusing, but the problem is that local authorities will have different infrastructures, service provision and levels of affluence,” he said.
