At a basic level, this approach of using data to create an artificial expanded mind capable of undertaking sophisticated tasks based on relatively simple prompts originally emerged with the development of computers powerful enough to render and play board games.
Whilst the most famous developments in this field concern chess, culminating in Deep Blue’s victory over Garry Kasparov, years before computers were powerful enough to even play chess, they were in the process of solving other games.
The first artificial intelligence capable of playing a game to perfection was Bertie The Brain, a noughts-and-crosses game created by Josef Kates for the 1950 Canadian National Exhibition. It had multiple difficulty levels, but its highest level was capable of a perfect game.
It was a good starting point given that the game could easily be solved by most human players to force a draw, but a version of Draughts produced two years later at the University of Manchester by Christopher Strachey was even more impressive.
Draughts was more complex than tic-tac-toe, but was not as complex as chess, go or shogi, all three of which would similarly prove to be vital stepping stones for general-purpose AI.
Mr Strachey wanted to develop a system of machine learning that would develop and adapt based on games it had played, could learn from books of other games and could play against versions of itself to find the most capable competitor.
All of these elements are key to modern machine learning and AI training, and whilst this early parlour game simulator was relatively rudimentary, it did manage to beat a human opponent, which was a sign of the potential AI would have.
