Can you imagine what life in lockdown would have been like without the likes of Netflix, Now TV, Amazon Prime and the rest? For a lot of us, checking out new shows and the latest movie releases has been helping us stay sane over the last few months but there’s one programme in particular that has captured the world’s attention and that’s The Last Dance.
If you haven’t come across it yet, the Netflix show charts the rise of the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, headed up by Michael Jordan – and it has received rave reviews from all quarters, so you know it’s going to be an epic watch, even if you’re not that into basketball.
Its popularity could, perhaps, be down to the fact that there’s a distinct lack of sporting events taking place at the moment because of the global pandemic, but it’s also certainly because the series gives viewers unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to one of the most prominent athletes ever – and one of the most elite sports teams ever in existence.
According to Forbes, the last two episodes of the ten-part series averaged 5.6 million viewers, with episode nine bringing in an audience of 5.9 million. The show is, in fact, the most-watched documentary content ever on ESPN, starting on April 19th with the first two episodes averaging 6.1 million viewers.
It was also a hot topic on Twitter and was the number one trending topic on the microblogging site for five Sundays in a row – so you know you’re in for a real treat if you haven’t caught up with it yet.
Of course, this isn’t the only sports series or film that’s ever been made and if you’ve been inspired by The Last Dance and want to watch more, you’ll find you’re spoiled for choice.
What about checking out OJ: Made In America, which you can find right now over on BBC iPlayer. This five-part series from Ezra Edelman actually won an Oscar for best documentary feature, although you might not have heard of it because it came out in the same year that The People Vs OJ Simpson did, which got a lot more coverage.
Or you might be taken with the idea of sitting down in front of Senna, a documentary from way back in 2010 but still available on Netflix now that charts the story of Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna da Silva and his rivalry with French driver Alain Prost.
And then there’s Bobby Robson: More Than a Manager, which is also available on Netflix, telling the tale of one of England’s greatest ever managers. Contributors include Alan Shearer, Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker, as well as Pep Guardiola, Ronaldo and JOse Mourinho – perfect for all you football fans out there.
