It may seem easier to simply flush certain items down the drains instead of disposing of them responsibly, particularly with waste and recycling centres around the UK currently shut because of the pandemic, but it’s very important that you take care with what you flush or you could end up causing serious sewer blockages as a result.
Yorkshire Water has just issued a plea to members of the general public to take care when disposing of DIY materials, having already dealt with numerous large blockages in its sewer system over the last four weeks because of people disposing of items down the drains and toilets.
Apparently, Google searches for ‘how to get rid of concrete’ have reached a five-year peak and with more people now doing DIY and waste centres being closed for the foreseeable future, it’s important not to send the likes of paint and wet concrete down the drain.
The water company now has to spend more than £25,000 removing a large buildup of concrete in a pipe in West Yorkshire after numerous attempts to get rid of it using high pressure water jetting failed. It is now attempting a three metre-deep excavation on the sewer to resolve the problem.
Aside from concrete, there are lots of other items you shouldn’t send down the drain, including coffee grounds, eggshells, waste fat, grease and oil, paper towels, wet wipes, feminine hygiene products and paper towels. Doing so can increase the chances of a blockage, which can prove difficult and expensive to sort out.
