The importance of the chemicals industry in the UK and globally has been stressed by the Chemical Industry Association (CIA) in its own manifesto, launched ahead of the upcoming election on 12 December.
In the manifesto, the CIA stressed that the global chemicals industry can help the world meet challenges including a growing population, increased energy demand, and rising demand for food and water.
The organisation said that cooperation between business and government is required to help tackle these global challenges, noting that these partnerships should be underpinned by “strong and competitive chemical and chemical-using industries”.
At the launch of the manifesto, CIA chief executive Steve Elliott stated that sustainability needs to be at the forefront of people’s minds. He added that this is something that those in the chemicals industry have long been aware of.
“CIA members manufacture light-weight plastics, high-performance catalysts and new battery materials that contribute towards more sustainable mobility by lowering emissions and increasing resource efficiency,” he stated.
Mr Elliott added that whoever comes into power following the 12 December election should consider how they can introduce policies that support the chemicals industry to help the country move towards its target of being net carbon zero by 2050.
He noted that the chemicals industry underpins everything from the latest wind turbine technology to the most recent advances in solar panels.
Among the things covered in the manifesto are Brexit, and what the chemicals industry would like to see once the UK leaves the EU. At the top of its list of priorities is “frictionless free trade” with the other two most important factors being “regulatory consistency and alignment, and access to skilled people”.
